Serwotka re-elected to lead civil servants for fourth term
Mark Serwotka has been re-elected as general secretary of the PCS civil service union.
The 51-year-old was re-elected unopposed in October to lead the 262,000-strong union for a fourth term. First elected in 2000 directly from the shop floor, Serwotka was one of a batch of young left-leaning union leaders to be elected at that time.
He has led the union in vigorous opposition to public sector cuts and austerity.
Welcoming his re-election he said he looked forward to “continue fighting this government’s cruel, damaging and unnecessary obsession with austerity”.
PCS has faced further pressure from ministers attempting to hamstring the union via an attack on facility time and check-off.
Serwotka said: “Despite ministers’ attempts to undermine us, PCS remains as vibrant and strong as ever.”
