Nissan workers agree above-inflation deal


Car workers have clocked up another above-inflation, long-term pay deal confirming that this sector is likely to be one of the pacemakers in 2016. 


The 7,400 workers at Nissan in Sunderland and the firm’s Technical Centre in Cranfield, Berkshire have voted for an increase of 2.75% plus a £750 lump sum in January and a further 2.75% in January 2018.


The package boosts paid maternity leave from 18 to 26 weeks. 


Unite national officer Tony Murphy praised the deal for rewarding staff and securing future employment at what he sees as a challenging time ahead for the British car industry. 


The Nissan deals comes after recent settlements at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Aston Martin (see Workplace Report, November 2016, page 4)


Unite members at JLR approved their inflation-busting deal with a 77% vote in favour.
