NUJ looks to build on success at Springer
The NUJ journalists’ union is starting the push for a further recognition agreement at magazine publishers Springer, after a successful campaign on the company’s Nature titles.
The Central Arbitration Committee awarded the NUJ recognition at Springer Nature without requiring a ballot after the union showed that a slim majority of staff were already NUJ members. Now the union is targeting its other (non-Nature) titles.
The company had derecognised the NUJ some years ago, leaving the union with hard work to do to recruit enough members for recognition.
The union ran off-site lunchtime recruitment meetings in pubs and one-off deals on subs for new members, including a 24-hour flash sale offering 50% off fees for a year. Eventually the union signed up just over 51% of the 375 staff.
