Average earnings rise
Average weekly earnings posted an increase of 3.9% in the year to October 2018 — up from a 2.9% increase the previous month.
The annual rate of inflation under the Retail Prices Index (RPI) — the inflation measure favoured by union negotiators — was 3.3% in October. This means earnings showed a welcome real-terms increase of 0.6 percentage points.
