Rise in Brexit hate crime

Front-line staff who work with the public are facing an increase in reported hate crime following the UK referendum vote to leave the European Union (EU), unions report.

Transport union TSSA is urging its members to offer solidarity and support to neighbours, friends and colleagues who may be in the firing line of post-Brexit racial abuse — with the Polish community a particular target. The union is advising members subjected to racial abuse or who witness it to report it to their line manager and also their TSSA staff representative or health and safety rep, especially if they are not satisfied with the way their complaint is dealt with.

Shop and distribution workers’ union Usdaw is deeply concerned about the post-Brexit reports of threats and abuse against migrant workers and people from minority ethnic groups, and is calling for calm and respect.

“Usdaw reps have for many years been providing support for members who face violence, threats and abuse and they will continue to do so in this challenging period after the referendum,” said general secretary John Hannett.
