Midwives’ union joins TUC

The TUC has welcomed the decision of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) to become a TUC affiliate. The RCM will be the first royal college to be a member of the TUC.

The RCM, which has around 43,000 members, nearly all of whom are women, will gain an automatic seat on the TUC’s general council.

The RCM board took the decision to seek affiliation following discussions that have taken place over two years since its workplace representatives’ conference voted overwhelmingly to join.

Chief executive Cathy Warwick said TUC affiliation would bring many benefits to the RCM. “It will enable us to contribute even more to the joint activities of colleagues from within the TUC. It also offers our members access to a wide range of education, learning and training opportunities.”

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady expressed delight that “the RCM has taken the historic step of becoming the newest member of the TUC”.

She added: “The TUC family is proud that we can now claim to look after working people from cradle to grave.”
