Lithuanian labour code passes new stage


The proposed new labour code in Lithuania, which will make it easier and cheaper to dismiss workers as well as introducing a range of other changes, has been approved by the Lithuanian parliament. 


The parliament completed its examination of the text on 6 May, despite ongoing opposition from the trade unions. 


The unions oppose many measures in the code which they see as worsening workers’ conditions, and they are also against plans to shift information and consultation rights from trade unions to works councils. 


However, although the code has gone through parliament, this is not the end of the story. 


It now goes back to the government for further revision, before returning again to the parliament for final approval.
