Usdaw targets Lidl supermarket

Unions have called on the Lidl supermarket chain to get round the table and talk about union representation, after the company reversed its plan to exclude Northern Ireland from its new Living Wage policy.

In September, Lidl announced that around half of its staff would see their hourly rate go up to £8.20 an hour across England, Scotland and Wales, and £9.35 an hour in London.

Following widespread outrage that Northern Ireland staff would not receive the rise, the company changed its mind. Michala Lafferty, area organiser for retail union Usdaw, said: “We have an ongoing campaign to recruit Lidl workers. Many are joining because they have real concerns about the way their employer treats them.”
