UNISON general secretary election


The 1.2 million-member public services union UNISON last month announced that Dave Prentis had been re-elected as general secretary for a fourth term. He fought off three other contenders, taking just under half of the votes — almost twice as many as runner-up Heather Wakefield.


However, the election process proved contentious, with allegations of malpractice levelled particularly at the union’s London regional staff. These are currently being investigated by the election returning officer and independent scrutineer — Electoral Reform Services (ERS). ERS has already reported to UNISON on matters related to the legal requirements of the election. 


However, it is still investigating “allegations of a serious nature that relate to alleged breaches of rules and/or election procedures”. It will report on these in the week commencing 11 January.
