Cameron plans attack on unions

Prime minister David Cameron confirmed to the BBC’s Andrew Marr that the Conservative manifesto for the 2015 general election will include plans to ban strikes in essential services, such as the London Underground, unless a certain high proportion of the union’s membership vote yes in a strike ballot.

During the recent strike action affecting London Underground services, mayor of London Boris Johnson said he had been given personal assurances by the prime minister that he would “deliver a deal on day one of a new administration”.

The unions angrily pointed out that UK workers already face the toughest hurdles to jump before being able to take action in defence of their jobs and living standards. TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “The prime minister now wants to make industrial action even more difficult. This shows his readiness to take the side of employers and big business against ordinary working people as his party’s backwoodsmen call the shots.”
