Unite win at video firm
General union Unite recently won a statutory recognition claim on behalf of 76 manual and technical workers at Cinram Operations in Ipswich.
The Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) found that, as a majority of the bargaining unit were already Unite members, there was no need for a ballot.
The process was unusual in that the employer argued that, since some of the union members had been made redundant and were shortly to leave employment, they should not be included when judging whether the union had majority membership.
The CAC disagreed, however, saying that, even excluding those staff who were working their notice period at the point a decision was to be made, there was a slim majority in union membership.
