Needlesticks campaign


Public services union UNISON has welcomed an HSE report on an inspection campaign to ensure the prevention and management of sharps (or needlestick) injuries in the NHS. 


Both UNISON and the Safer Needles Network had pushed for the initiative to reinforce the Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013, which they successfully campaigned for. 


The report shows that there were health and safety breaches in 90% of organisations visited; 83% failed to fully comply with the sharps regulations; and the HSE issued improvement notices to 45% of organisations
