Stress is an ongoing concern

Stress continues to be major work-related concern for a huge number of workers across a range of sectors, according to recent research.

A massive 82% of teachers in Wales say they have experienced more workplace stress in the last year, according to new research by the NASUWT teachers’ union. And the same proportion have suffered from anxiety due to their work. The survey also found that three-quarters of the teachers claim their job has damaged their mental health in the last year.

A separate NASUWT survey of disabled teachers found that more than half had also experienced an increase in workplace stress in the last year.

A new survey by the UCU lecturers’ union has found that 71% of university staff say insecure contracts have damaged their mental health, with many working unpaid, holding down multiple jobs and struggling to pay their bills.

The union says insecure work is also damaging the quality of research and education students receive, and rubbished claims that staff support flexible contracts.

The CWU communications union highlighted recent research by employment service Acas. Acas’s Stress and anxiety at work survey report 2019 found that two-thirds of employees have felt stressed and/or anxious about work in the last 12 months.
