Cost of being an intern

Being an unpaid intern can cost thousands, according to research by charity The Sutton Trust.

It estimates the minimum outgoings for an unpaid intern living in London for a six-month internship came to £6,081, with the largest expenditures being on rent and essential bills. In Manchester, the total cost for a six -month unpaid internship came to £5,078.

The trust said these costs clearly restrict unpaid internship opportunities to those with sufficient savings, or with access to family funding.
