Pension funds for council housing

A new report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) proposes that local councils should be encouraged to use money from their pension funds to help build more new housing. This, combined with the release of land owned by councils, could lead to the building of up to 250,000 homes a year according to the IPPR.

Andy Hull, senior research fellow at the IPPR, said: “We are facing a housing crisis, with a huge gap between the supply of new houses and our demand for more homes. The forthcoming housing strategy will be a serious test of whether the government appreciates the depth of our housing crisis and is smart enough to unlock the funding the build new homes. We also need government action to get developers developing.”
