UK government debt hits 104.5% of GDP

ONS figures on UK government debt show that at the end of December, general government gross debt reached £2,206.5 billion – equivalent to 104.5% of gross domestic product (GDP). This is 13.7 percentage points above the average of the 27 European Union (EU) member states for the same point in time.

According to the ONS, the general government deficit (or net borrowing) was £65.3 billion during the fourth quarter last year, equivalent to 11.9% of GDP; this is 4.9 percentage points above the average of the 27 EU member states for the same period.
