Most deprived 10% living 9.7 years less

The most deprived 10% of males in England were living 9.7 fewer years than the least deprived 10% between 2018 and 2020. Females lived 7.9 years less. The figures, supplied by the ONS, show that “both sexes have seen statistically significant increases in the inequality in life expectancy at birth since 2015 to 2017.”

Females and males living in the most deprived areas of England saw a “significant” decrease in life expectancy between 2015 to 2017 and 2018 to 2020.

The situation is similar in Wales, where male life expectancy at birth in the most deprived areas was 74.1 years compared with 81.6 years in the least deprived areas; the same comparison among females was 78.4 years and 84.7 years respectively.

Female life expectancy at birth in the most deprived areas significantly decreased by 0.7 years between 2015 to 2017 and 2018 to 2020.

Male healthy life expectancy (HLE) at birth in 2018 to 2020 was 54.2 years in the most deprived areas compared with 67.6 years in the least deprived areas; for females, the same comparison was 53.3 and 70.2 years, respectively.
