Stress and mental health at work - a guide for trade unions and working people

Chapter 5

Negotiating a stress policy

[ch 5: page 49]

The HSE has developed an example or model stress policy. This includes a statement that the organisation acknowledges the importance of identifying and reducing workplace stressors. It commits the organisation to:

• identify all workplace stressors and conduct risk assessments to eliminate stress or control the risks from stress, and ensure that these risk assessments will be regularly reviewed;

• consult trade union safety representatives on all proposed action relating to the prevention of workplace stress;

• provide training for all managers and supervisory staff in good management practices;

• provide confidential counselling for staff affected by stress caused by either work or external factors; and

• provide adequate resources to enable managers to implement the company’s agreed stress management strategy.

It also sets out the responsibilities of managers, occupational health and safety staff, HR, employees, safety reps and the safety committee.
