Union moves strike day to assist poppy collection

The RMT transport union has rescheduled a planned strike from 3 November to 9 November, after learning that the earlier date was the Royal British Legion’s London Poppy Day, when collections take place at rail and underground stations across the capital.

The Royal British Legion had been faced with having to cancel the event. It responded to the union’s move with a statement saying: “We are very grateful to the RMT for cancelling its strike action on 3 November, and we appreciate the significance of this gesture. We recognise and respect the right of all unions to take action for their members.”

The next RMT Network Rail strike days are now 5, 7 and 9 November. Members working for the train operating companies will take action on 5 November, while London Underground and Overground (Arriva Rail London) members will strike on 10 November as part of a separate dispute.

Meanwhile, the TSSA rail union has announced nearly a week of industrial action in November.

Thousands of its members in Network Rail and in individual train companies will take strike action or action short of strike. The union is seeking a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies, a pay rise which meets the cost of living crisis and no unagreed changes to terms and conditions.
