Women with two jobs

The number of women doing a second job has more than doubled since 1984, rising to 670,000 in autumn 2001, according to figures from the Labour Force Survey. Women make up the majority of those with second jobs, and part-time workers are almost three times as likely to have a second job as full-time workers.

The survey also found significant differences in earnings between male and female second-job holders. While most men with second jobs earned more on average in their main job than men with only one job, women with a second job earned less in their main job than women doing only one job.

People working in personal services occupations were most likely to have a second job, and there were also high levels of teachers with second jobs.
