Fair pay evidence

Pay ratios (like the proposed 20:1 maximum) “can assist in the promotion of fair pay”, said general union Unite’s submission to the Hutton review into fair pay in the public sector. But, says the union, inequality is greatest in the private sector, and pay in the wider economy should also be looked at.

The union also flagged up problems with variable pay and attacks on national bargaining, underlined the need for transparency and equality-proofing, and defended the two-tier Code of practice on workforce matters and minimum benchmarks for the lowest paid.
