Police jobs cut

Manchester police has announced that it is to cut 3,000 jobs over four years which will reduce its overall size by almost a quarter.

The aim is to save £134 million as part of the government’s spending review. Dave Prentis, general secretary of the UNISON public services union, pointed out that this is just the tip of the iceberg with police forces across the country getting rid of posts.

“Tory claims to protect the frontline are a sham,” he said, adding that losing police officers, staff and police community support officers (PCSOs) will see crime rates soar and community safety plummet. “Adding police, staff and PCSOs to the dole queues will only pile more onto the benefits bill,” said Prentis.
