Disabled Workers’ Conference

Government cuts are having a devastating impact on disabled people, said the TUC.

Speaking at the annual TUC Disabled Workers’ Conference in May, TUC assistant general secretary Kay Carberry warned that the government’s austerity drive is destroying jobs and cutting back the public services many rely upon.

“As millionaires get a huge tax cut, disabled people are seeing their benefits callously withdrawn and whittled away,” she said.

She pointed out that the transition from the Disability Living Allowance to Personal Independence Payments “will take a billion pounds out of disabled people’s pockets”, and added that the move towards Universal Credit will leave nearly half a million disabled recipients worse off.
