RMT leadership election opens

Nominations for the post of general secretary of the RMT transport union opened last month following the untimely death of former leader Bob Crow.

Meanwhile, the union’s senior assistant general secretary Mick Cash was appointed acting general secretary.

The union announced an election timetable that will see a new leader in post by the autumn. Nominations are open until 2 July, with voting starting on 21 July and ending on 22 September.

Cash, who will be standing for the post, said that in the meantime the union would continue its industrial and political agenda as decided by RMT’s democratic structures.

He said he would step up the fight for job security and better pay and conditions, adding: “I will use all my leadership experience to make sure the RMT remains a militant, member-led union.”
