New strike date for council staff

Three unions representing over a million local government workers and school support staff have announced a second day of strike action, following the joint action taken on 10 July.

Members of Unite, UNISON and GMB will take strike action on 14 October. The previously announced strike action by UNISON for 30 September will not now proceed.

No further talks have taken place since the 10 July action, despite the unions offering to take talks to the Acas arbitration and conciliation service.

UNISON is also now balloting members in academy schools who are subject to national joint council pay awards, with a view to them joining the industrial action in October.

At the same time, all three unions, together with the Royal College of Midwives are also balloting for industrial action over pay in the NHS. Results will be known by the end of September.
