Women on the board

A meeting of EU labour and social affairs ministers on 7 December 2015 failed to reach agreement on an EU proposal to set quotas for the number of women on company boards.

The European commission called in 2012 for a target of 40% by 2020, and a number of countries have legislated on the issue.

However, some states consider that this is an issue that should be decided at national rather than EU level, and although the latest proposal provides considerable flexibility in this direction, agreement proved impossible.

As a result, any decision on this has been postponed until later in 2016 at the earliest.
