Women workers

Women and parents of young children have been under particular strain from the coronavirus lockdown, according to research carried out by the Women’s Budget Group that monitors the gender impact of government policies, the Fawcett Society gender equality campaign and academics.

The research found that while 57% of women working outside the home say they must because they cannot afford to stay at home, this is true of only 34% of men. And 32% of women compared with 15% of men say their employer is pressuring them to continue to work outside the home.

Half of parents with young children (51%) will struggle to make ends meet in the next three months, and 57% face higher levels of debt after the crisis. These levels are twice as high as for adults without young children.

These issues are leading to high levels of anxiety, most prominently among mothers of young children.
