UNISON election

Five candidates had declared they are seeking the coveted post of general secretary of the almost 1.7 million-strong UNISON public services union as Labour Research went to press. The winner will succeed Dave Prentis, who retires in December.

Four hopefuls would make history if they were elected by becoming UNISON’s first female or first black general secretary, or both.

Three of the five are full-time officials of the union. They are Roger McKenzie and Christina McAnea, who are both assistant general sectaries, and Margaret Greer, a national race equality officer. The two lay candidates are Hugo Pierre, a member of the national executive committee, and Paul Holmes, currently suspended from the union but eligible to stand.

Nominations are due on 25 September and the ballot, if required, will run from 28 October to 27 November 2020.The result is due to be announced on 11 January 2021.
