Arts funding cuts

Unions in the arts sector have come together to protest at funding cuts to higher education (HE) performing arts subjects as the government sets out plans to prioritise subjects it describes as “vital to the economy and labour markets”.

The seven unions have published an open letter to prime minister Boris Johnson setting out how the funding cuts to creative and performative arts subjects “threatens the health and accessibility of the entertainment and education sectors, jeopardises the livelihoods of HE and creative workers, and narrows training opportunities for future generations”.

The government wants to halve grants going to “high cost“ HE arts subjects in England to prioritise funding to “subjects vital to the economy and labour markets”.
