Women on boards

Minsters from EU member states have agreed a common position on a planned directive aimed at increasing the number of women on company boards, a key stage in getting new EU-wide legislation passed.

The directive will set two targets for the proportion of the under-represented sex (in most cases women) on the boards of companies quoted on the stock exchange.

Either 33% of all board members or 40% of non-executive board members must come from the under-represented sex.

These targets must be achieved by 2027 and member states must choose which of the two targets will apply.

The legislation will have an impact on employee representation. There are 13 EU states where employees are represented at board level and in the private sector and they will be included in these targets.
