Miners get one-off payment


Unions representing around 36,000 miners in Polish mining group PGG ended their occupation of the company’s headquarters on 16 July after the company agreed to make an average one-off payment of 6,000 zł (around £1,060) to compensate for inflation in the first half of the year. 


The payment is equivalent to around 5% of the company’s wage bill, but inflation was running at 15.5% in June, so the agreement foresees additional payments for both the third and fourth quarters.


The agreement follows a meeting between union leaders and the deputy prime minister, Jacek Sasin. The bargaining position of miners has been strengthened by the war in Ukraine and reduced gas deliveries from Russia.
