Where Now For Labour?

Anthony Giddens, Fabian Society publication, Polity, 84 pages, paperback

This author discusses what the way forward should be for the Labour Party and its government of the future. He deals with the impact of globalisation on world markets, and its detrimental effects on social democratic parties in other countries.

While critical of the old-established views of the left, he suggests that the reinvigoration of government at the national level should be accompanied by devolution and an expansion of regional and local democratic power.

Overall, however, many in the unions will fundamentally disagree with his premise that a better Britain will only be achieved by building on the New Labour project, and not returning to policies of the past.
