Trade union recognition

Can you provide a handy definition of what recognition means under the terms of the relevant legislation?

Recognition is defined under section 178(3) of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 as "recognition of the union by the employer, or two or more associated employers, to any extent for the purpose of collective bargaining." Under the statutory procedure an award of recognition can establish the procedures for negotiation on pay, hours and holidays. Recognition does not imply that there will be an agreement on any of these issues, but that the parties will attempt to conclude one. Recognition also gives access to other employment rights, including the right to time off for trade union duties and activities and the right to information for collective bargaining.
