Learning at work guide

This month's booklet from the Labour Research Department is a guide to learning at work, covering developments over the last three years since the last booklet on the topic was published.

Learning and training - an LRD guide shows how the union role is expanding and provides valuable information for the growing network of union learning reps. The statutory rights introduced last year for these reps are explained, and there is advice on negotiating a workplace learning agreement.

The government has introduced many initiatives on skills and training, and these are described, together with the institutional framework. This includes the Learning and Skills Council, the Sector Skills Councils and Regional Skills Partnerships. New developments, such as the expansion of Employer Training Pilots, are also set out.

Trade unions are centrally involved in all of these, and the booklet provides many examples of where unions are playing an important role in learning and education in the workplace.

Learning and training - an LRD guide is available from LRD, 78 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8HF, price £4.20 or £10.95 for employers or commercial organisations. For details of bulk discounts, please telephone 020 7928 3649.
