Unions back MPs on council housing

A report by MPs published last month called for a level playing field for council housing. Support for the 'fourth option' for council housing is the result of an enquiry by the Council Housing Group of MPs.

It explains that currently many council tenants are told that if they want proper maintenance and improvements then they must choose between a stock transfer, private finance initiative or arms-length management company.

The report makes clear, however, that funds are available for direct investment in council housing - the 'fourth option'.

The report has been supported by several major unions including the professional and technical union Amicus, public services union UNISON, the GMB general union and construction union UCATT.
