Union backs sacked Nissan worker

Skilled and professional union Amicus is supporting a member who was sacked by car firm Nissan while off sick with stress and anxiety.

Brian Murphy had worked at the Washington plant for 16 years before his sacking in September.

Nissan employed a private investigator to watch Murphy during his sick leave. He was secretly filmed doing odd jobs such as putting up railings, fitting a radiator and turfing a lawn.

Although Murphy explained to managers that doctors had told him to keep busy in order to aid his recovery, he lost his job. He is now suing the company for unfair dismissal, in a case expected to be decided next month.
