Amicus reps secure consultation improvements

Intervention by safety reps from professional union Amicus over slips and trips at engineering firm Eaton Transmissions has led to wider safety consultation and the adoption of Union Inspection Notices (UINs).

An inspection in January found that non-slip flooring had worn smooth, creating significant slip hazards, but remedial work had still not been carried out a month later.

A meeting was held with management, at which it was agreed that new flooring would be put in. And the reps also took the opportunity to negotiate an agreement on wider matters, including UINs – formal notices issued by safety reps on breaches of the law.

“The agreement includes facility time for weekly safety reps’ committee meetings, office facilities, a protocol for following up inspections and safety notice boards,” said rep Mitch Playfair. “Management also accepted that UINs could be served, if safety reps felt it was necessary.”
