Survey reveals low pay in magazine industry

A survey of members’ pay by the National Union of Journalists’ London Magazine branch has revealed that while the highest salary in the survey was £75,000, the lowest was £18,000 – something branch officials branded as “scandalous”. In addition, although the £18,000-a-year writer was paid for a 35-hour week, they said they actually worked around 48 hours.

The figures hide a wide variation within job roles, with some journalists earning up to £39,000 while editors earned anywhere between £26,000 and £52,000. The average working week was 36.5 hours although 10% of respondents said they worked 50 hours a week.
