Union recognition at British Medical Association

Over 80 trade union officials and other lower-tier managers at the British Medical Association are set to gain collective bargaining rights after voting overwhelmingly in favour of recognition for the GMB union.

The union had originally asked for recognition for the BMA’s trade union officials alone, but this bargaining group had been rejected. However, management agreed that, if all staff in that pay band (level 5) voted for recognition they would accept the result. Other grades at the BMA already have GMB recognition.

In the event, 72 of the 81 eligible staff – almost 90% – voted “yes” in what union rep Matt Saywell called “a great result”.
