CWU slams “dog attack” posters

The CWU communication workers union has slammed South Eastern Trains for acting irresponsibly by displaying season ticket posters illustrated by a postal worker being attacked by a dog with the slogan “Good news for you — bad news for the postman.”

Dave Joyce, CWU national safety officer, has asked the train company to get rid of the posters and to act more responsibly. He said: “6,000 postmen and women get attacked, bitten and mauled by dogs every year whilst delivering the mail and the problem is continuing to get worse. Many of the attacks result in serious debilitating physical injuries and mental trauma for our people. Many never fully recover. Two of our members nearly died when attacked by dogs.”

Last year the union launched its Bite-Back campaign to raise the profile and awareness of the problem. It wants the government to change the law on dangerous dogs and for owners to receive harsher penalties.
