Slovenia freezes public sector pay

The newly elected Slovenian government has passed austerity legislation which extends the freeze on pay in the public sector into 2012.

Public sector pay has not increased since 2010 and the initial plan was for it to continue to be frozen throughout the whole of this year. However, following discussions with the unions, a compromise was reached limiting the freeze to the first six months.

Under the terms of the legislation all other social benefits are also frozen, with the singe exception of unemployment benefit, which will go up — a particular trade union demand.
