Over 50’s carer guide

After a survey of older union members found that nearly two-thirds were juggling paid work with caring responsibilities, the TUC has responded by publishing a new guide for over 50’s carers.

The guide sets out that people who care for a child or adult and have worked for their employer for at least 26 weeks have the right to request flexible working.

From April 2014, the right to request flexible working will be extended to all employees with 26 weeks’ service, even those without caring responsibilities.

The guide sets out the right to unpaid time off work to deal with an unexpected event involving the person being cared for, rights to parental leave and a brief outline of the 2010 Equality Act.
