Win at Al Jazeera

The BECTU and NUJ media unions have secured joint recognition through the statutory process at the Al Jazeera International broadcaster’s London office, which employs some 130 staff.

Recognition was awarded by the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) without requiring a ballot after the unions built up a membership level of 57% of the bargaining unit.

The CAC rejected the management’s argument that there should be a ballot because there was a lack of understanding among staff about recognition and collective bargaining, and a lack of support for it from non-members.

The two unions are now working with the management to establish a collective bargaining framework.
