Race equality charter

The Equality Challenge Unit, which promotes equality and diversity in higher education, is trialling a race equality charter mark for higher education institutions. It is aimed at improving the representation, progression and success of black and minority ethnic (BME) staff and students in the sector.

Participants will be required to analyse their own race equality data and identify any issues that need addressing. They will also have to survey their BME staff and students to identify issues and ideas for change, and produce a three-year action plan.

A UCU university and college union report in 2013 highlighted the under-representation of BME staff in senior positions in higher education institutions.
