Bargaining news

Lambeth College

Lambeth College, at the centre of a bitter dispute about contractual changes, has a high staff turnover rate, which at 24% is much higher than the 18% average.

Yet, the college also gave the biggest pay increase of any London college to its principal Mark Silverman, according to the UCU lecturers’ union. He was given a massive 12.9% pay rise last year — when half of London’s college bosses saw their pay remain the same or fall.

UCU members walked out on indefinite strike on 3 June in a dispute over contracts that would create a two-tier workforce, with new staff on inferior terms that increase working hours, cut sick pay and reduce holiday entitlements.

UNISON members have joined in the strike action, while UCU has advertising in the local press to get its message over to students and their parents.
