Unite helpline for Sports Direct workers

A confidential advice and support helpline for workers at the Sports Direct retail chain has been launched by general union Unite.

It was set up as part of a campaign to confront what the union calls “abusive Victorian work practices” at the company’s warehouse in Shirebrook, Derbyshire.

It followed the airing of a Channel 4 Dispatches programme, which revealed a workforce in constant fear of losing their jobs. The programme estimated that all but about 300 out of the more than 5,000 workers at the depot were on zero-hours contracts with two employment agencies.

The helpline number is 0333 323 1441.
