Health & safety - HSE Monitor

Electromagnetic fields

The HSE is currently consulting on how the European Directive on electromagnetic fields (EMF) should be implemented in the UK. The requirements of the directive must be brought into UK law by 1 July 2016.

The HSE is proposing to transpose only the requirements of the directive which go beyond, or are more specific than, those covered by existing UK legislation, using new Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016.

The HSE says the new regulations will be supported by guidance outlining the measures that should be taken to assess exposure to EMFs and manage the risks identified.

The European Commission has published a practical guide containing 12 case studies on good practice for implementing the requirements of the directive. Aimed particularly at small to medium sized enterprises, the guide will also be useful for workers and safety reps.

The guide can be downloaded from the Commission’s Employment and Social Affairs publications catalogue.
