Breakdown at Honda

Car maker Honda is risking a “total breakdown in relations,” transport union Unite has warned.

The union, which has previously fought off a de-recognition attempt by the company, says the manufacturer is “treating employees with contempt”.

The latest warning came after union reps reported multiple problems in employment relations at the Swindon plant. They claim shop stewards have been refused permission to attend meetings and have been obstructed in their efforts to represent employees at disciplinary and grievance hearings.

They also say stewards have had to fight for the correct payment of overtime rates and campaign for employee access to drinking water, and that the company has failed to respond to emails from Unite officers relating to grievances.

Honda told the Swindon Advertiser it was “surprised” by the union’s comments.
