FBU launches cancer guidance

The threat of cancer as a result of exposure to contaminants will be on the agenda of every brigade, says the fire brigades’ FBU union.

The union has launched new initial guidance for its members on protecting themselves from contaminants that could cause cancer. The guidance says that mounting evidence suggests that firefighters may be at higher risk of exposure to carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) and other contaminants in the course of their careers. It explains why firefighters are at greater risk, highlighting three potential areas where carcinogenic contaminants are present: fires and by-products; diesel fumes; and building materials such as dust and asbestos.

It advises firefighters what they can do to prevent unnecessary contamination, including a ten-point checklist. It also sets out what managers should do and contains negotiating advice for reps.
