More action needed on lasers and drones

Aviation regulators and the government have been “pitifully slow” to respond to the BALPA pilots’ union call for action following an increasing number of drone near-misses and laser attacks on passenger planes.

The union told TUC Congress that it was “surely only a matter of time before a major accident is caused by a drone collision or a pilot being incapacitated by a laser strike” unless action is taken. The union says that the increasing number of incidents is making it harder to maintain the safety in the skies that the travelling public is entitled to expect.

Congress called on the aviation authorities to urgently use their regulatory and legislative powers in order to avert tragedy.
